Admin with SuperUser: channels, rights, registering users

Log in as SuperUser to create channels, set rights with ACLs and groups, and register your users.

SuperUser is the built-in administrator of every Mumble server. It can do everything, so use it to set up the server and to give rights to trusted users, then chat with your normal user.

1. Log in as SuperUser

  1. Generate the SuperUser password on the Mumble card of your server (shown once; the server restarts).
  2. In the Mumble app, add the server a second time with the user name SuperUser.
  3. Connect and enter the SuperUser password when Mumble asks for it.

2. Create channels

Right-click the root channel (or any channel) and choose Add…. Give the channel a name; tick Temporary for a channel that disappears when it is empty. Drag channels to move or nest them; right-click → Edit to rename them or set a password.

3. Register users

Registering a user reserves their name for their certificate: nobody else can use it, and rights can be given to them. Right-click a connected user and choose Register. Users can also register themselves (Self → Register) when the server allows it. Registered users are listed under Server → Registered Users, where you can rename or remove them.

4. Set rights (ACL and groups)

  1. Right-click a channel and choose Edit, then the Groups tab: add registered users to a group, for example admin.
  2. On the ACL tab, add a rule for the group and allow or deny rights such as Enter, Speak, Make channel, Move, Kick, Ban or Write ACL.
  3. Rules are inherited by sub-channels unless you untick Inherit ACL.
  4. Give the group admin the right Write ACL on the root channel: its members can then administer the server without the SuperUser password.

Lost the SuperUser password? Generate a new one on the Mumble card of your server. The old one stops working at once.

Kick and ban

Right-click a user → Kick or Ban. Bans are listed under Server → Ban List, where you can remove them. All of this is stored in mumble-server.sqlite and included in your backups.
