What this means
An SSL certificate (technically TLS) encrypts the connection between a browser and a website and proves that the visitor is really talking to your site. Browsers only show the padlock when the certificate is valid, issued by a trusted authority, covers the exact name in the address bar and comes with its complete chain.
The most common problems are an expired certificate, a missing intermediate certificate ("incomplete chain") and a certificate for the wrong name, for example one that covers example.ch but not www.example.ch. Each of them shows visitors a warning page.
Free certificates are valid for about three months and renew themselves automatically. If yours shows "Expires soon", check that automatic renewal is working.

Frequently asked questions
How do I check if an SSL certificate is valid?
Enter the host name, for example www.example.ch, and start the check. You see straight away whether the certificate is valid, trusted, issued for this name and how many days it has left.
What does "incomplete chain" mean?
Between your certificate and the trusted root there is usually an intermediate certificate. Your server has to send it as well. If it doesn't, some browsers and many apps refuse the connection. Install the full chain (often called "fullchain") on your server.
Why does the check say "wrong name"?
A certificate is only valid for the names listed in it. If you check www.example.ch but the certificate only covers example.ch, browsers show a warning. Request a certificate that covers both names.
How long is an SSL certificate valid?
Free certificates are usually valid for 90 days and renew automatically. Paid certificates are valid for up to about a year. Our check shows the exact dates and the days remaining.
Can I check a certificate on another port?
The SSL checker tests port 443, the standard port for HTTPS websites. Other ports and mail servers are not checked.
