Create your Mumble server
Order a Mumble voice server, choose its settings and set up the SuperUser in a few minutes.
Mumble is free, open-source voice chat software (BSD licence): low latency, encrypted connections and free apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. Your Mumble server runs on our game server platform with backups, a web console and SFTP.
1. Order the server
- In your customer area, open Game servers and click Order.
- Choose the category Voice servers and then Mumble.
- Pick a plan: Mumble needs very little memory, so the smallest plan or a small "Build your own" plan is enough for most groups.
- Choose the location closest to your users and complete the order. The server is installed and started within a minute or two.
2. Choose the settings
Open your server and go to Game settings. Every setting is applied at the next restart (Save and restart).
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Server name | Name of the root channel that everyone sees first. |
| Server password | Only people who know it can join. Leave it empty to let anyone with the address join. |
| Welcome text | Message shown when someone connects. Simple HTML such as or
works. |
| Max users | How many people can be connected at the same time (up to your plan's limit). |
| Max bandwidth per user | Voice quality per user: 72 kbit/s is Mumble's default, 130 kbit/s suits music. |
3. Set up the SuperUser
SuperUser is the administrator of your Mumble server. On the Overview tab, the Mumble card has the button Generate SuperUser password. The password is shown only once: store it in your password manager. The server restarts to apply it. If you lose it, generate a new one.
Use SuperUser only to administer the server (channels, rights, registered users). Chat with your normal user name, and give trusted people admin rights instead of sharing the SuperUser password.
Backups
Channels, registered users, rights and bans are stored in the file mumble-server.sqlite in the main folder. It is part of the automatic backups like every other server; restore it on the Backups tab. Reinstalling the server updates Mumble and keeps this file and your settings.
