DNS zones: included DNS, DNS-only plans and editing records

ThunderHosting DNS is free with domains and web hosting; DNS-only plans cover other domains. Learn record limits, extra record packages and how to edit A, MX, TXT and other records.

ThunderHosting DNS hosts the DNS zone of your domain on our name servers. Depending on how you use the domain, the zone is included for free or billed as a DNS-only plan. The DNS records card shows where your zone comes from and how many records you use.

When DNS is free

  • Included with your domain registration: every domain registered or transferred with us includes a DNS zone with up to 250 records at no extra cost.
  • Included with your web hosting: the DNS zone of a domain connected to your web hosting is included, by default with up to 250 records.

DNS-only plans

For a domain that is not registered with us and not connected to web hosting, you can order a DNS-only plan in the store. DNS-only plans are available in record tiers such as 10, 100, 250 and 1000 records; the current prices are shown in the store. After ordering, set our name servers at your registrar.

More records

When you reach the record limit, click Get more records in the DNS records card. A records package is charged pro rata until your domain or web hosting renews; afterwards it appears as a second line on the same renewal invoice. Click Do not renew to let a package end at the next renewal, or Keep renewing to undo that. For hosting zones, upgrading the hosting plan can also include more records.

Edit DNS records

  1. Open the domain page (Domains, Manage domain) or the Domain / DNS tab of your hosting.
  2. In the DNS zone, add a record: choose the type, enter the name and the value, and for MX or SRV the priority.
  3. Save. Use the delete icon to remove a record and Refresh zone to reload the list.

Host names are relative to your domain: @ stands for the domain itself (the apex), www for www.example.com.

TypeTypical use
A / AAAAPoints a name to an IPv4 / IPv6 address, for example your website.
CNAMEMakes a name an alias of another host name.
MXDefines the mail servers that receive email for the domain.
TXTText values, for example SPF, DKIM, DMARC or domain verification.
NSDelegates a subdomain to other name servers.
SRVService records, for example for some chat or calendar services.

Supported record types are A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS and SRV.

Zones used by web hosting

If the zone belongs to a web hosting, the hosting needs certain records. With Smart DNS sync it adds missing records itself and never overwrites yours; if a record you created conflicts, you choose Keep mine or Use hosting value. With Manual DNS you maintain those records yourself; the hosting only writes TLS certificate (ACME) and DKIM TXT records.

DNS changes usually take effect within minutes, but cached old values can remain visible for some time, depending on the TTL of the record.
