What this means
Before a browser can show anything, it has to find the server (DNS), connect to it, set up the secure connection (TLS) and wait for the first byte of the page. The server response time (TTFB, time to first byte) is the part your hosting influences most: under 200 ms is fast, over 800 ms is noticeably slow.
We measure from our data centre in Lugano, so you see how quickly your site answers visitors in Switzerland. A website hosted far away needs more time just for the round trips, even when the server itself is fast.
We test the HTML document three times and show the median, so one slow run does not distort the result. Images, scripts and fonts are not loaded: for a full page analysis, combine this test with your browser's developer tools.

Frequently asked questions
How fast should my website be?
The server should start answering in under 200 ms; up to about 800 ms is acceptable. The whole HTML document should usually arrive in under a second. After that the browser still loads images, scripts and styles.
Why is the test run from Switzerland?
If your visitors are in Switzerland, what counts is how fast your site answers them there. We measure from our data centre in Lugano, in the south of Switzerland.
Why does the result differ from other speed tests?
Many tools load the whole page with images and scripts, from other locations. We only measure the HTML document from Lugano, which isolates the server and network part. Both views are useful.
How many tests can I run?
Without an account you can run a few speed tests per hour; with your ThunderHosting account you get noticeably more. The current limits are shown right below the test form.
How can I make my website faster?
Use page caching, a current PHP version, compression (gzip or Brotli) and HTTP/2, and avoid unnecessary redirects. Hosting close to your visitors also shortens every round trip.
