What this means
A WHOIS lookup shows the public facts about a domain name: whether it is registered, since when, until when, and with which nameservers. The registration date tells you how old a domain is, which helps when you judge an online shop or an email you are not sure about.
The status codes show whether a domain is protected, for example by a transfer lock, or whether it is expiring and may soon become free again. DNSSEC means the domain's DNS answers are cryptographically signed, which makes them harder to fake.
We never show the owner's name, address or other contact details, even when they are public somewhere else. If a domain is free, you can register it with us straight away.

Frequently asked questions
How can I see if a domain is free?
Enter the domain and start the lookup. If it is not registered, you see "available" and can register it right away. If it is taken, we show similar names that are still free.
How do I find out how old a domain is?
The lookup shows the date the domain was first registered and works out its age in years and months. Very young domains deserve a little more caution, for example with online shops you don't know.
Why can't I see the owner of a domain?
For privacy reasons we never show names, addresses or contact details. For .ch and .li domains, and for most other extensions, this data is not public anyway.
What does "transfer lock" mean?
A transfer lock stops the domain from being moved to another provider without the owner's consent. It is a normal protection. If you want to move your own domain, you unlock it at your current provider and ask for the transfer code.
Does the WHOIS lookup work for .ch domains?
Yes. It works for .ch and .li as well as for .com, .net, .org, .eu, .swiss and most other domain extensions.
