Which tool when: putting a domain online
The tools follow the order in which a new website usually goes live:
- WHOIS lookup: check whether the name is still free, or which nameservers an existing domain uses.
- DNS check: after pointing the domain at your hosting, confirm that the A, AAAA and MX records show the new values everywhere.
- SSL checker: once the site answers, make sure the certificate covers both the domain and www and is not about to expire.
- Website speed test: finally, see how quickly the server responds and what slows the page down.
Free and fair
All tools are free and need no account. To keep them fast for everyone, checks run in a short queue and the number of checks per minute is limited (for the speed test, per hour). Logged-in customers get higher limits. Now and then we may ask you to confirm that you are human.
Only public websites, domains and IP addresses are checked: private and internal networks are refused. Results are kept for a short time, so repeating a check may show the recent result.
