Managing a domain: contacts, name servers, transfer and renewal
Manage a domain registered with ThunderHosting: domain contacts, WHOIS privacy, ThunderHosting DNS or custom name servers, transfer lock and auth code, and yearly renewal.
Each domain registered or transferred with ThunderHosting has its own page. Open your organization, go to Domains and click Manage domain. If the domain belongs to a web hosting, you find the same tools on the Domain / DNS tab of the hosting dashboard.
Domain contacts
Under Domain contacts you keep the contacts used for your domains. Each contact has a name, optional company, email, phone, address and a role: Owner, Admin, Technical or Billing. Mark one contact as Default to pre-fill new orders. The Owner (registrant) is the legal holder of the domain, so keep it accurate.
WHOIS privacy
If the extension supports it, tick WHOIS privacy protection on the domain page to hide your personal details in the public WHOIS. The price, if any, is shown next to the option.
Name servers and DNS
- ThunderHosting DNS: the domain uses our name servers (shown on the domain page) and you manage the records in the DNS zone on the same page. This is free with every domain registered with us.
- External DNS: click Use external DNS if you want to manage DNS at another provider. The dashboard first lists the records you need to add there so your website and mail stay online.
- Custom name servers: after the records exist at the new provider, enter at least two name servers under Set custom nameservers on the Domain / DNS tab of the linked hosting. They are saved at the registry.
- To come back, click Switch to ThunderHosting DNS.
Change name servers only after all records exist at the new DNS provider. Otherwise your website and email are offline until the records are added.
Transfer lock and Auth/EPP code
Transfer lock and the Auth/EPP code for moving a domain away from ThunderHosting are not available as self-service in the dashboard. Contact support from the email address of your organization and we will unlock the domain and send you the code.
Renewal
- Domains renew yearly. The renewal invoice is created 30 days before the due date and is charged automatically if you have a saved payment method.
- The domain page shows the registry expiry, the next due date in your account and any prepaid years.
- Renew +1y or Renew +5y creates an invoice and moves the next due date forward, so you can prepay several years.
- At the registry, the domain is renewed automatically about 27 days before it expires, as long as your account is paid beyond that date.
If you no longer need a domain, cancel its subscription under Organization, Services before the next renewal. An expired domain can become available to others.
